i can’t believe it’s already been a week since last friday!!! this past week was “golden week” in japan, where a string of national holidays + the weekend make an extended vacation week. i try not to leave the house during this time, because out-of-towners from all over japan and the world crowd the whole city. in fact i always recommend to friends planning to visit from overseas to avoid this time of may. that said, since it is officially friday in japan, here’s this week’s #tbt #fbf post! explaining something a little different at japanese weddings.

今日はもう金曜日！！ゴールデンウイークもあってか今週もまたまたあっという間に過ぎてしまいました！毎年GW中は混雑を避ける為お出かけを控えるのですが、今年は２度都内に出かけました。ちょうど数年前に比べて外国人観光客が増えたかも〜と思っていたら、ニュースでも今年は観光客が増えたことを言っていました！外国の友人が日本へ遊びに来る時は、GWだけは避けた方が良いよーと伝えるのですが、今回、外国の観光客の方々を見て、人混みの多い都会を楽しむのも東京の観光ポイントの一つかもしれないですね！というところで、今週の #tbt #fbf は、欧米の結婚式と違う日本の結婚式で見られるある事です。

first, to explain a little about seating charts in japan. in western weddings, a seating chart may be found at the entrance into the wedding reception and guests find or are handed a name card with the table number of where to sit. in japan, all guests are handed something called a sekijihyo (or “seating chart”), which tells them exactly where to sit (not only the table number but also the exact seat, at which their name card will already be placed). this seating chart has all the guests’ full names, relation to the bride and/or groom, and if the guest is a work acquaintance, their job title as well.

欧米の結婚式で見られないのは『席次表』を渡される事です。欧米の『席次表』は、披露宴の入り口に大きくポスターやウェルカムボードの形をしたものが置いてある事が多いです。ウェルカムボードの近くにはゲストのネームカード（席札）がずらーっと並べてあり、テーブル番号ごとに並べてあったりします。それを持って、指定のテーブルへ行って座る位置を自分で選ぶ事が多いです。（もしくは、指定のテーブルのセンターにネームカードが置いてあり、自分で選んだ席にネームカードを置く事もあります。）ゲストの肩書きや新郎新婦との関係が書かれる事は無く、相手の事を知らない要素が他人との会話をスタートさせるきっかけになるのだと思います。

no matter the country or culture, the great thing about being a wedding item designer is that i can be creative, have fun, and see my clients and their guests enjoy the creativity.

最終的には、国や文化が違っても、ウェディングアイテムデザイナーとして一番楽しいのは、創造力を発揮できお客様とそのゲストの方々がそれをエンジョイしていただける事です。

yes it’s that time of week! #tbt #fbf! it came so soon that i didn’t even realize the new month started with friday! this week i bring to you letterpress programs from the S+H custom logo wedding.

今週も来ました、#tbt #fbf デー！今週はあっという間に過ぎて、気がついたらもう金曜日！今週の #tbt #fbf は、先週の S+H オリジナルロゴ招待状に続き、オリジナルロゴの活版印刷式次第をご紹介します。

mr and mrs S+H especially wanted to incorporate letterpress items into their wedding. i’d always been interested in letterpress since i was young, for that special feel and the warmth, and the extra love that goes into the printing process. however, i never realized that letterpress printers were even in japan. had i not worked with mr & mrs S+H, i may not have found there are letterpress printers here! (but as they are not as common as they are in the west, they tend to be quite pricey here in japan.)

S+Hさんは、欧米で見られる活版印刷へのこだわりがございました。実は、私も前々から活版印刷の風合いやプロセス、温かみがとても好きでしたが、日本で活版印刷業者がある事すら知らず、諦めかけていました。このお客様のおかげで、私は日本の活版印刷を知ることになったのです！

we decided to letterpress the outside “cover” of the program and bound the inside pages with the cover using chord.
プログラムのカバーを活版印刷で作りました。それをたたみ、中に式次第のページを差し込んで、コードで結びました。

on the back cover is the S+H logo, on the inner cover is Corinthians 13.
裏表紙にはロゴ、内側には「第１コリント１３章」を活版印刷しました。

this week on the #tbt #fbf blog, i bring to you a custom logo wedding invitation. it was an absolute pleasure to work with this couple, as they share the same taste as myself when it comes to colors, fonts, and simplicity.

今回の #tbt #fbf ブログでは、オリジナルロゴのウェディング招待状をお送りします。こちらのウェディングの新郎新婦とは色味、フォントとシンプルさへの好みが共通しており、デザインするにあたってとても楽しく制作できました。

the key points of this invitation’s design ／デザインのキーポイントは:
1. wedding colors: olive, orange, and natural colored paper
ウェディングカラー：うぐいす、橙色、ナチュラルな紙色
2. a letterpress friendly design (the main invitation is printed with letterpress)
活版印刷（招待状本状が活版印刷）
3. a simple logo for the “title” of their wedding “S+H”

the couple loved the logo!! so they used it every chance they could throughout their wedding, which i will introduce in the coming weeks. since the actual invitation was printed in letterpress, i decided to take advantage of the depth and expanded the logo to cover the whole background of the inside. by using a lighter color, bolder line, and bigger size it allows the eye to focus on the front dimension (the invitation details).

お二人はロゴをすごく気に入ってくださって、ウェディングのいたるところでたくさん使用してくださいました（それはまた改めてご紹介いたします）！活版印刷で招待状本状を印刷しましたので、それを利用したデザインを考えました。背景に、薄く・太く・大きくロゴを使う事により、主張しすぎずに奥行きを出すことができます。

when i work with invitation sets, i like to think of how the entire set looks put together. each individual card is important on it’s own (and can have varying design elements), but it’s like an equation that needs to add up to 100 in terms of color, layout, and especially in this case, geometric elements.

招待状セットをデザインする際は、最終的に重ねた状態までを考えるのが重要だと考えています。一枚一枚のカードや付箋は大事な役目を果たしておりますが、組み合わせて『一つ』にならなければなりません。私は特にカラー、レイアウト、そして今回は図形的にもまとまるようにデザインをしております。

#tbt #fbf past wedding item post time! one last post about my friend’s blue & yellow wedding. here is the gift card box i made. she wanted something that represented a three-tier cake.

#tbt #fbf の過去のウェディングアイテムをご紹介デーです！親友のブルー＆イエローウェディングについて、最後のご紹介になります。こちらはグリーティングカードボックスになります。欧米のウェディングではお祝儀ではなく、グリーティングカードを贈ることが多いです。カードにはゲストの「気持ち」でお金を入れられる事が多いですが、日本のような一般的に共通した金額のマナーは特にありません（グリーティングカードとお金以外には、プレゼントを贈られる事もあります）。こちらは、そのグリーティングカードを入れていただくボックスのような物になります。イメージは３段ウェディングケーキです。

under all the beautiful wrapping paper (the bride and i fell in love with this wrapping paper to use for a previous friend’s wedding) is actually styrofoam board. wedding’s often bring mishaps and accidents, so to avoid any breakage, i chose styrofoam.
実は、ラッピングペーパーの下はフォームボードを使用しているのです。ウェディングには、アクシデントが付き物だったりします。ので、なるべく頑丈に仕上げるのにはフォームボードが良いのです。

of course there is a slot to insert cards, but the box also needs to be able to open. with a card stock hinge, i attached the top two tiers. the bottom base tier is for decoration.
グリーティングカードボックスは、カードの入れ口はもちろん必要ですが、取り出し口も必要です。カード紙のちょうつがいで１段目と２段目をつなげました（ベースとなる第３段は飾りです）。

this tulle flower acts as a “button” to tie the ribbon closure to.
チュールのお花を「ボタン」風に利用し、リボンで結びつけられる仕組みになっています。

[d.i.y.] tulle veiled wedding programs

i introduced this “tulle veiled wedding program” on one of my #tbt #fbf posts last month. on this post, i will show you how to make it yourself! i recommend this especially if you’re in your wedding crunch time. to make this program from printing -> cutting the paper and tulle, to tying the ribbon, it took me a total of 30 minutes.
以前に #tbt #fbf の書き込みでこちらの「チュールベールのウェディングプログラム」をご紹介いたしました。今回は、こちらをご自身で作れる d.i.y. をご説明いたします。特にご結婚式の最終段階でお急ぎの場合は特におすすめの d.i.y. です！印刷から紙とチュールの裁断、リボンを結ぶまでかかった時間は３０分！

LET’S START! ／始めよう！

what you need ／材料：
any A4 size printing paper ／お好みのA4サイズ印刷用紙
card stock (9cm × 22.75cm) ／カード紙 (9cm × 22.75cm)
tulle (9cm × 22.75cm) ／チュール (9cm × 22.75cm)
scissors ／ハサミ
ruler ／定規
hole puncher (i used a 3mm hole, up to 5mm is fine) ／
穴あけパンチ (今回は、3mmの穴を使用しましたが、5mmまで可能）
5mm width ribbon (45cm) ／ 5mm幅リボン (45cm)

1. create your text on a spreadsheet application using landscape orientation. each individual page should measure 7.5cm × 21cm, which means 3 pages can fit on 1 A4 size page. print.
テキストをスプレッドシートアプリケーションなどを使用して、横向きで作成する。１枚１枚のページサイズが 7.5cm × 21cm になるように、アプリケーション上でA4サイズに３枚のページを横に並べる。印刷する。

2. card stock should be cut to 9cm × 22.75cm. then, cut A4 size printed text into individual pages measuring to 7.5cm × 21cm.
カード紙は 9cm × 22.75cm にカットし、A4 用紙は 7.5cm × 21cm のページに切り分ける。

3. cut tulle to the same size as card stock.
チュールはカード紙と同じサイズに合わせて切る。

4. place tulle and program pages as shown in photo. the top of the pages should be placed 0.6cm away from the edge of the tulle. punch a hole 1cm from the top of the pages and horizontally in the center. if possible, it is more efficient to punch a hole through the pages and tulle all in one go.
プログラムのページとチュールを写真のように重ねる。ページの上端から1cm、横幅の中心位置に穴をあける。可能であれば、チュールと紙をいっぺんに穴あけしますと効率よく、綺麗に仕上がりやすいと思います。

5. mark and punch two holes in the card stock. 1.7cm away from the top, 3cm apart.
カード紙に穴を２つ開ける。上端から1.7cm、3cm間隔で。

6. prepare 45cm length ribbon. ／ 45cmのリボンを用意する。

7. this is the last step! pull the ribbon evenly through the two holes of the card stock. then pull the ribbon through the single hole of the program pages, then tulle cover.
最後のステップです！カード紙の２つの穴にリボンを通し、続けてページとチュールの１つの穴に通す。

8. make sure to pull the ribbon all the way through and evenly!
リボンはきつめに引っ張ってカード紙から通したリボンが平行になっていることを確認。

9. tie the ribbon and voila! ／リボンを結んで完成！

#tbt #fbf past wedding item post time! in continuation of last week’s banana leaf paper programs, i bring to you the rest of my friend’s wedding items! with blue and yellow as wedding colors, black and white as accent colors, and the theme being “bon voyage”, it was a fun, bold, and colorful wedding.

#tbt #fbf の過去のウェディングアイテムをご紹介デーです！先週のバナナリーフ紙式次第の続きになります。その友人の結婚式の他のアイテムをご紹介いたします。ウェディングカラーはイエローとブルー、アクセントカラーは白と黒、テーマは、「ボン・ヴォヤージュ」（良い旅を）。ボールドかつカラフルで楽しい制作でした。

to begin with, one of the first items i worked on were these name placement sailboat sails. they are absolutely adorable and easy to make. for the added personal touch, i had handwritten the guests’ names. (lemon boat inspiration from pinterest)

先ず最初に作ったのは、席札ならぬ「席船」！船の帆の部分は簡単に作られて可愛くてたまらないのです。ゲストの名前は手書きしました。(レモン席船は pinterest よりインスパイアされています。）

next came drink menus. the wedding couple had their wedding before they moved to a different country, thus the “bon voyage” theme. with the bride-to-be, we mixed together some cocktails to come up with their original drink. as with the past two #fbf posts, these menus were made at home, with text created on a spreadsheet application and the photo shot in a makeshift “photo studio” at home!

次にドリンクメニュー。新郎新婦のお二人は海外に引っ越す前にこの結婚式を挙げましたので、「ボン・ヴォヤージュ」というテーマになりました。ご新婦さまと一緒にオリジナルカクテルを夜な夜な考えたものです。前回ご紹介した式次第と同様、こちらのメニューも自宅で作りましたので、テキストはスプレッドシートアプリケーションを使用、写真は「おウチスタジオ」にて撮影したのです！

table numbers! one of the first things that the bride had decided on were these lemon table number vases. the royal blue satin ribbon really compliments the lemons and the black and white table numbers. the variety of vase shapes also added to the fun atmosphere of this wedding.

そして、テーブルナンバー！ご新婦さまが早いうちから決めていたのは、レモンを入れたテーブルナンバー花瓶。様々な花瓶の形がまたウェディング全体の楽しい空間に大きく加わっていました。

lastly, are the thank you tags found on the favors. as with the banana leaf paper used in the wedding programs, the bride wanted to incorporate eco-friendly details. their wedding invitations were plantable, and on these thank you tags are plantable hearts (both plantable items were ordered online).

最後に、プチギフトのサンキュータグ。バナナリーフ紙を選ばれたご新婦さまは、ウェディングの所々にエコなディテールを取り入れることにこだわられていました。招待状は丸ごと植えられる紙に印刷されており、このタグに縫い付けたハートも植えられる物でした。（植えられるアイテムは共にインターネットで注文された物です。）

#tbt #fbf past wedding item post time! this time is about a simple and natural wedding program. i actually made these for my friend’s wedding. we went to the store together and she selected brown craft paper for the base and banana leaf printing paper. the banana leaf paper is really wonderful visually (the texture!) and ecologically–apparently, for each banana tree, after bananas are harvested, the trees/leaves go to waste (i just learned this recently, from a Panasonic “Eco-Navi” video on the train!)

#tbt #fbf の過去のウェディングアイテムをご紹介デーです！今回は、シンプルでナチュラルなウェディング式次第。これは、アメリカの友人の結婚式のために作ったものになります。一緒にお店に行って材料を買いに行ったのですが、彼女が選んだのは、未晒しのクラフト紙とバナナリーフの自宅印刷用紙。バナナリーフ紙は、ビジュアル的にも（手触り）eco的にも本当に素敵なものなのです。つい最近、山手線のトレインチャンネルで流れていた動画で見たのですが、バナナの木は一度しか実らないため、実が収穫されたら、茎は廃棄されるのです。

same as my previous #fbf post, this program was also created on a spreadsheet application and printed at home. i’ve also introduced this program on an earlier blog post, talking about my favorite fonts, “helvetica neue ultra light”.

前回と同様、今回の式次第もスプレッドシート作成アプリで作ったテキストを自宅で印刷しました。そして、実は、以前に私のお気に入りのフォント（「ヘルヴェティカ・ニューウルトラライト」）をご紹介した際にこのウェディングプログラムをブログでお見せしております。

on the back, i “instagrammed” a screenshot of their personal wedding homepage to gather photos of their special day on their personal wedding hashtag.

裏面にはお二人のウェディングホームページから撮ったスクリーンショットをインスタグラムで画像処理をし、ゲストから当日のお写真を催促するお二人のハッシュタグを作りました。
